Description
Honmonji, the principal temple of the Nichiren sect's Ikegami lineage in present-day Ota Ward, Tokyo, was founded at the site of Nichiren's death in 1282 and draws pilgrims throughout the year. Its five-story pagoda is the most architecturally distinctive structure on the extensive grounds. Hasui's treatment of this site as a meisho-e (famous-place print) situates a historically resonant architectural landmark within a seasonal landscape, continuing a documentary tradition that extends from Hiroshige and Hokusai through the shin-hanga revival of place-based printmaking in the twentieth century. Seasonal foliage—spring cherry blossoms or autumn ginkgo—likely frames the pagoda, integrating the architectural subject within the natural setting. The composition is consistent with Hasui's practice of anchoring landscape mood in a recognizable structural form.
