Description
Kasuga Taisha in Nara is one of Japan's most venerated Shinto sanctuaries, its approach paths lined with hundreds of stone lanterns and its grounds inhabited by semi-wild deer. Hasui returned to this subject across multiple editions, drawn by the visual drama of the shrine's vermillion structures emerging from the deep shade of ancient cryptomeria forest. In this second version, the rain treatment likely emphasizes the lanterns' amber glow against a darkened, rain-wet stone path, with the tree canopy pressed close overhead and moisture condensing on the stone surfaces. The contrast between warm lantern light and cool rain atmosphere was a technical challenge requiring careful management of transparent color layers on dampened washi. Hasui's carvers rendered the rough texture of the stone lanterns' surfaces with fine incised lines, while the rain was printed as a separate diagonal-line block. The multiple editions of this composition reflect its sustained appeal to collectors seeking prints that evoke sacred atmosphere.
