Description

Shinobazu Pond in Ueno, Tokyo, was a subject Hasui returned to across different seasons and weather conditions, and this print presents the site in nocturnal rain. The pond, occupying the eastern edge of Ueno Park, is associated with the Benten shrine situated on its small island and was a familiar meisho landmark from Edo-period woodblock prints. Hasui's treatment shifts the site's traditional associations toward atmospheric introspection: rain lines animate a dark sky reflected in the still water, lotus leaves or reeds along the bank serve as foreground framing elements, and lantern or temple light creates a warm focal point within the prevailing deep blue-black tonality. The oban-format composition employs graduated bokashi in both sky and water registers to suggest the mirroring quality of a rain-disturbed but largely calm surface. The urban Tokyo setting distinguishes this print from Hasui's provincial travel subjects.
