Description

Matsushima — one of the canonical "three views of Japan" — provided Hasui with a subject that combined topographic drama and atmospheric possibility. This nocturnal rainy scene depicts the pine-covered rocky islets of Matsushima Bay in Miyagi Prefecture under rainfall, likely with dark, rain-pocked water in the foreground and silhouetted pines receding into a mist-softened distance. Hasui typically rendered rain through closely spaced diagonal lines printed in a dilute ink, layered over graduated bokashi in the sky to suggest low cloud cover. The oban-format composition would subordinate topographic detail to tonal mood, emphasizing the reflective quality of wet stone and calm water under night conditions. This impression is one of multiple extant states, and variations in the depth of the sky gradation and the density of the rain lines distinguish individual printings.
