Description
This impression of the Matsu Pond restaurant subject shows the characteristic warm tonality of the lantern-lit interior balanced against the cooler night tones of the surrounding water and pine foliage. Traditional restaurants (ryotei) built at the edges of garden ponds were a recurrent subject in Hasui's work, combining the architectural interest of the wooden structure — its shoji screens glowing from within, its wooden veranda extending over the water — with the reflective surface of a still pond and the textural presence of pine trees. The title's reference to matsu (pine) suggests that the pond and its garden setting were defined by large pines whose silhouettes would frame the composition from above. In this second impression, the key-block lines defining the pine needles and the architectural joinery show slight softening relative to the first state, consistent with extended use of the printing blocks.
