Description

This 1936 print from the series Nihon fûkei shû higashi Nihon hen (Collection of Scenic Views of Japan, Eastern Japan Edition) depicts Saishô-in temple in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, published in a numbered series documenting landscapes across eastern Japan. Saishô-in is best known for its five-story pagoda completed in 1667 under the Tsugaru domain and designated an Important Cultural Property. The series format required Hasui to produce designs that were both locally specific and nationally legible, a balance he achieved through careful attention to seasonal conditions and site-specific architectural detail. This composition may show the pagoda in autumn foliage or under the clear late-afternoon light characteristic of his non-snow Hirosaki treatments, printed on dampened washi with flat color fields built from multiple carved blocks.
