Description
A fifth impression of Hasui's Saishoin snow composition, this print documents the sustained demand for one of his most recognized winter subjects. The Saishô-in pagoda in Hirosaki, its Edo-period tiered structure draped in snow, provided Hasui with a subject that combined architectural precision with his signature atmospheric handling of winter conditions. Later impressions in long-running editions sometimes show reduced crispness in carved line edges as the woodblocks wore, or shifts in ink saturation as the printer adjusted to block condition. The composition's power derives from the contrast between the pagoda's dark structural timbers and the flat white snow surfaces, with the sky's bokashi gradation completing the tonal range from deep indigo to the pale luminosity of the washi ground.
