Description
Saishoin is a Shingon Buddhist temple in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, whose five-story pagoda — a designated Important Cultural Property — is among the most photographed structures in the Tohoku region. Hasui depicts the pagoda rising above a heavily snow-laden landscape, likely viewed from a low vantage point that emphasizes the vertical thrust of the tower against a pale winter sky. The composition is characteristic of his snow-series work: gradated bokashi shading transitions the sky from deeper tone at the top to near-white near the horizon, evoking the flat, diffuse light of an overcast northern winter. Deep snowfall compresses the foreground into a single white plane, anchoring the pagoda's warm-toned woodwork and dark eaves. The print belongs to a body of work Hasui produced during research trips through the Tohoku and Hokkaido regions, areas whose severe winters provided subject matter that earned him his reputation as a master of snow scenes.
