Description
Snow transforms Senzoku-ike's familiar contours into a study in tonal restraint that exemplifies why Hasui earned the designation 'Artist of Snow.' White accumulation on the island shrine's roof, the stone bridge railing, and the horizontal branches of surrounding trees contrasts with the dark, still water of the pond, which in winter conditions would reflect a pale, overcast sky rather than foliage. Multiple separate blocks were required to differentiate the various white registers: the flat snow on horizontal surfaces, the subtle shadow tone in snowdrift hollows, and the graduated pallor of the overcast sky above the treeline. The bokashi gradation of sky and water in snow scenes required the Watanabe workshop's printers to work with minimal pigment on damp washi paper, building tonal weight through repeated light impressions. The pond's quiet enclosure made it well suited to Hasui's interest in silence and stillness as compositional qualities.
