Description
From the series Nihon fukei senshu (Selected Views of Japan), this print depicts Shofuku-ji, a Rinzai Zen temple established in Nagasaki in 1629 and one of the oldest Chinese-style Buddhist temples in Japan. Hasui likely framed the scene through the ornate karamon (Chinese-style gate) or within the temple compound, where tiled rooflines curve against an open sky. The Nagasaki prints in this series reflect Hasui's interest in architecturally distinctive sites; Shofuku-ji's Chinese-influenced structures offered visual motifs markedly different from Shinto shrines or Edo-period townscapes. The print was published by Watanabe and printed on washi in the oban format standard to the series.
