Description
Benten Pond (Benten Ike) in Shiba Park was a small ornamental lake containing a diminutive island with a shrine dedicated to Benzaiten, the Shinto deity associated with water and music. Hasui's compositions of this site characteristically use the still pond surface as a reflective plane, mirroring surrounding pine trees and, in several versions, the upper portions of Zojo-ji's Sangedatsumon visible in the middle distance. The interplay between architectural mass and natural reflection was a compositional strategy Hasui employed across many of his urban landscape prints. Sky gradations rendered through bokashi establish the time of day and atmospheric temperature, often suggesting the muted light of early morning or dusk. The park's enclosed, quiet character suited the contemplative register that defines his meisho-e work.
