Description
This meisho-e print depicts Shichirigahama, the sweeping coastal strand in Sagami Province (Soshu) along Sagami Bay in present-day Kanagawa Prefecture. The beach's name translates to 'seven-ri beach,' referencing its considerable length. Hasui likely composed the scene with the curved shoreline receding into the distance, the Pacific surf rendered through graduated bokashi printing to suggest the foam and movement of breaking waves. A distant silhouette of Enoshima Island or Mount Fuji may anchor the horizon — a compositional device Hasui employed repeatedly at this location. The atmospheric treatment of sky and sea, characteristic of his shin-hanga practice under publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, demonstrates his ability to render open coastal space through layered color printing on absorbent washi.
