Description
This shin-hanga landscape depicts a small wooden vessel caught in a spring rainstorm, a subject that allowed Hasui to demonstrate his command of atmospheric water effects. Diagonal rain lines, rendered through fine parallel woodblock carving, animate the composition against a sky graded with bokashi from pale grey to deep blue-grey. The boat — likely a shallow fishing craft typical of Tokyo-area waterways — sits low on a surface broken by rain stippling. Hasui's publisher Watanabe Shozaburo likely printed this on hosho washi with multiple overprints to build the layered tonal depth characteristic of the shin-hanga revival. Spring showers appear throughout Hasui's oeuvre as occasions to explore transient light and the dissolution of form in wet weather, distinguishing his work from the clearer atmospheric conditions favored by earlier ukiyo-e landscape masters.
