Description
This impression of the Funabori snow subject represents one of several known printings or compositional variants of this scene from eastern Tokyo. Funabori's canals and wooden riverside structures gave Hasui a setting in which architectural geometry and flowing water could be observed under winter conditions, combining two recurring elements in his landscape vocabulary. The shin-hanga production process involved close collaboration between designer, carver, and printer, and impressions from different production runs of the same design can show measurable differences in ink saturation, bokashi gradation, and the weight of snow rendered through unprinted washi. This print would have been produced at the Watanabe Shozaburo workshop, where consistency across the Funabori designs was maintained through the use of the same key blocks (omohan) with variations in color-block application across different print runs.
