Description
Among Hasui's Tokyo snow scenes, the Funabori series stands out for its focus on an area of the city less frequently depicted in either traditional ukiyo-e or shin-hanga prints. This impression, one of several related compositions or states depicting Funabori in winter, likely shows the district's characteristic combination of waterways, wooden residential architecture, and the spare geometry of snow-covered surfaces. Hasui's printer used the grain and surface texture of hosho washi to model the quality of accumulated snow, leaving areas unprinted to render snow's reflective brightness against the cooler tones of the sky and water. The multiple Funabori impressions in circulation suggest sustained collector interest in this subject and may indicate that the composition was reprinted across several decades of the Watanabe workshop's production history.
