Description
This woodblock print of snow at Funabori in eastern Tokyo is one of several impressions documenting this district under winter conditions in Hasui's body of work. The repetition of the Funabori snow subject across multiple designs or print states reflects both the compositional fertility Hasui found in this location and the commercial viability of snow scenes within the shin-hanga market, where winter landscapes sold reliably to collectors both in Japan and abroad. Canal reflections, snow-laden rooflines, and the muted tonal range achievable through limited palette printing characterize compositions of this type. The bokashi gradations used to model the winter sky — typically achieved by dampening the paper before applying pigment — required skilled execution at the Watanabe workshop and account for much of the atmospheric quality that distinguishes premium impressions from later or lesser printings.
