Description
Ginkakuji (the Temple of the Silver Pavilion) in Kyoto's Higashiyama district is one of the most depicted sites in Japanese art, and Hasui returned to it on multiple occasions to record the complex's mossy garden, sand cone (kogetsudai), and the Zen-inspired main hall under different seasonal conditions. This impression, one of several Ginkakuji snow designs, would show the temple precinct transformed by winter accumulation, with the kogetsudai's precise geometry softened by snow and the surrounding pines weighted with white. Hasui's handling of architectural subjects within natural garden settings required careful balance between the geometric lines of buildings and the organic forms of moss, rock, and vegetation. The complex's subdued, weathered aesthetic made it a natural subject for Hasui's restrained palette of greys, blue-whites, and deep greens in winter compositions.
