Description
This impression of a Ginkakuji snow composition is one of several Hasui produced of this landmark Kyoto temple complex, each likely recording a slightly different vantage point or atmospheric condition within the garden. Ginkakuji's dry sand garden features — particularly the Ginshadan (silver sand sea) and the kogetsudai — provided Hasui with abstract geometric forms that translate naturally into the flat compositional language of woodblock printing. Under snow, these already-spare elements assume a further visual economy, and Hasui's management of the unpigmented washi for snow surfaces against printed tones for architecture and vegetation demonstrates the technical discipline characteristic of premium Watanabe workshop production. Multiple Ginkakuji snow prints exist in Hasui's catalog, reflecting both the site's cultural prestige and the compositional range it offered across different seasons and vantage points.
