Description
This second treatment of Hinuma lagoon likely adopts a different vantage point or registers a different quality of winter light than the companion version. Where one composition may emphasize the reed beds and near shoreline, another may pull back to show a wider sweep of the lagoon with a settlement or tree line at the far bank, the intervening water functioning as a broad reflective plane. Snow on the ground and perhaps falling as light flurries would add a middle-register element to the composition, partially obscuring the far shore in atmospheric haze. The print reflects Hasui's practice of returning to productive sites across multiple visits — a method that allowed him to refine his understanding of a location's spatial structure and seasonal character. Hinuma's estuarine quiet suited his preference for compositions of stillness and natural atmosphere over dramatic topography. Successive versions of the same site often differ in color palette as well as composition.
