Description
A third Hinuma composition indicates the site held sustained interest for Hasui, possibly resulting from separate publishing commissions or from his practice of exploring a location from several angles before selecting a final design. This version may emphasize different foreground elements — a grouping of bare trees, a cluster of reed-thatched boathouses, or a different curvature of the shoreline — while maintaining the defining horizontality of the lagoon landscape. Variations in color palette between editions were common in shin-hanga publishing, and successive printings of related designs sometimes differ in sky tone, snow tint, or water color. The Hinuma group collectively demonstrates Hasui's documentary attention to Japan's lesser-known wetland landscapes, regions without the celebrity of Matsushima or Itsukushima but possessing their own atmospheric character. The prints also reflect the breadth of regional travel that sustained his output of more than six hundred designs across a four-decade career.
