Description
Inokashira Park in Musashino centers on a spring-fed pond that supplied water to Edo during the Tokugawa period. The park contains a small island shrine dedicated to Benzaiten, accessible by bridge and framed by mature zelkova and cherry trees that stand bare in winter. Hasui's composition likely positions the viewer at the water's edge, looking across the pond toward the Benten-do or along a snow-banked path beneath leafless branches. The intricate tracery of bare deciduous branches against a winter sky required careful key-block carving to render with precision. Snow accumulates in branch crotches and along the pond's low banks, while the water surface holds a flat gray-blue tone produced through even bokashi application. This is a Tokyo meisho subject consistent with Hasui's series documenting urban parks and gardens on the city's western periphery. The composition presents a familiar site in the muted tones of midwinter, emphasizing the park's stillness rather than its spring cherry-blossom associations.
