Description

Kiba, in eastern Tokyo's Koto Ward, was the center of Edo's timber trade. Logs floated down from mountain forests were sorted, stacked, and sold along the district's canal network, giving the neighborhood its distinctive character of waterways edged with lumber yards and wooden storage sheds. Hasui's composition likely depicts one of these canals in winter — broad, low-banked, and bordered by stacked timber or warehouse rooftops, under a gray overcast sky. Snow lies on the canal banks and on the flat rooftops of the surrounding structures. This is a shitamachi subject, documenting the working landscape of old Tokyo rather than a celebrated scenic view. The horizontal sweep of the waterway, with its flat water surface and unbroken industrial framing, distinguishes this print from Hasui's shrine and mountain compositions. Few figures are likely present — perhaps a boatman on a flat-bottomed craft — consistent with his preference for emptied, atmospheric scenes. The print contributes to his documentary record of Tokyo's Edo-period urban fabric.
