Description

Kinkakuji, the three-story pavilion in northern Kyoto whose upper two floors are covered in gold leaf, stands above Kyoko-chi, the Mirror Pond. Hasui's winter composition places the pavilion reflected in the pond's still surface, with snow accumulated on each of the three roof tiers and on the pine boughs framing the structure. Gold leaf is rendered in yellow-ochre pigment, the single warm element in an otherwise cool palette of blue-white snow, gray water, and dark pine needles. The still pond surface doubles the pavilion's form and the overcast sky, creating a symmetrical composition that the surrounding pines and snow-covered garden interrupt. Hasui's treatment emphasizes the garden's winter stillness rather than the pavilion's ornamental richness, consistent with his preference for atmospheric mood over architectural documentation. The composition required careful registration across multiple color blocks to maintain the reflection's precision. Kinkakuji in snow is among the most frequently revisited subjects in his Kyoto series, reflecting both its visual interest and its commercial appeal to domestic and international collectors.
