Description
This meisho-e depicts Kiyomizudo, the small Buddhist hall within Ueno Park modeled on Kyoto's famous Kiyomizudera, under a winter snowfall. The hall's curved karahafu gable and tiled roof carry heavy accumulations of snow, rendered with flat white gradations characteristic of shin-hanga printing. Bare-branched trees and stone lanterns likely occupy the foreground, their forms simplified against a pale or darkening sky. The site held deep resonance for Edo-period Tokyoites as a substitute pilgrimage destination, and Hasui returns to it to explore how snow transforms familiar urban landmarks into austere, atmospheric compositions. Subtle bokashi gradations in the sky create the hushed quality that distinguishes his snow prints from those of earlier ukiyo-e masters.
