Description
One of multiple compositions Hasui made of Miyajima (Itsukushima Island) in winter, this print depicts Itsukushima Shrine and its environs under snow. The Miyajima snow subjects were among the most frequently reprinted in Hasui's catalogue, and successive editions show measurable variation in ink density, colour mixing, and baren pressure. This version likely focuses on the O-torii gate, the shrine's principal visual symbol, standing in the tidal flats with snow resting on its crossbeam, or on the covered corridors of the main shrine complex with snow-laden roofs reflected in shallow water. Hasui visited Miyajima multiple times and approached its winter aspect from several vantage points. The red of the vermillion lacquerwork against white snow and grey water creates a restrained but striking colour relationship.
