Description
This impression of Hasui's Miyajima snow composition belongs to a group of prints that document the island shrine under winter conditions across different vantage points and light conditions. The Itsukushima Shrine complex, built on a tidal flat so that it appears to float at high tide, presents an inherently dramatic relationship between architecture and water that snow further intensifies. This version may emphasize the approach to the shrine from the ferry landing, with the O-torii gate visible in the distance across snow-dusted water. Hasui's characteristic treatment of still water uses long horizontal colour bands laid down with a flat brush, the gradations suggesting both depth and the sky's reflection. The print's size—likely oban—frames the horizontal expanse of the inland sea.
