Description
Bearing the Japanese title 雪の宮嶋 (Yuki no Miyajima), this snow print of Itsukushima Island is identified by its Japanese title alongside the romanised form, indicating a formally issued design within Hasui's series output. The composition, one of several Hasui made of this celebrated meisho in winter, likely shows the vermillion O-torii gate and main shrine buildings with snow accumulating on horizontal surfaces and winter light flattening the distances across the Seto Inland Sea. The use of washi paper in unprinted areas to represent snow is a central technique of shin-hanga, and Hasui calibrates the proportion of white to colour carefully to avoid overstatement. This edition's title inscription and seal placement identify it within a specific publication sequence.
