Description
One of Hasui's depictions of Nezu Gongen Shrine in winter, this print engages the compositional challenge of rendering a familiar site under snow — a condition that both obscures architectural detail and clarifies geometric form. The shrine in Bunkyo's Nezu district is notable for its long corridor of vermilion torii gates and its pond garden, either of which might anchor the foreground. Snow settling on curved karahafu gables or stone pathway surfaces would be rendered with careful pigment modulation, while the sky overhead shifts through bokashi gradation from a lighter tone near the horizon to deeper cool gray. This impression illustrates Hasui's characteristic approach to meisho-e: the named place is identifiable through specific architectural or spatial cues rather than through general scenery, placing it within a tradition stretching back to Hiroshige's famous-place series.
