Description
A winter view of Nezu Gongen Shrine in Tokyo's Bunkyo ward, this print carries the formal Japanese title Nezu Gongen no Yuki, situating it within Hasui's documented series publications. The Nezu Shrine precincts offered a densely layered visual subject: the tunnel of torii gates, the main hall's elaborate roof structure, stone water basins and lanterns, and the surrounding garden with its pond and camphor trees. Under snow, the architectural elements are united by a common white plane while retaining their individual shapes as dark silhouettes. Hasui's drawing method — extensive on-site sketching followed by studio refinement — allowed him to compose these scenes with careful attention to spatial depth and to the specific proportions of the shrine buildings. The shin-hanga production process then translated that spatial clarity into precise keyblock line and layered pigment.
