Description
Kawase Hasui produced multiple designs under the title Sekiguchi no yuki (Snow at Sekiguchi), reflecting his practice of revisiting a single locale to capture it under varying light or season. This second version likely presents a distinct composition from the earlier design, possibly shifting the vantage point along the Kanda River or emphasizing different architectural elements of the Sekiguchi neighborhood — stone garden walls, earthen embankments, or the wooden footbridges characteristic of the area. Published within Watanabe's shin-hanga program, the print would have been executed on washi paper using multiple carved woodblocks, with the carver (horishi) and printer (surishi) working to render Hasui's gouache design with precision. The title subtitle in romanized Japanese suggests a catalogued release within a named series or organized group, a common practice Watanabe used to market related landscape subjects. Tonally, Sekiguchi scenes tend toward restrained palettes of grey, white, and muted blue.
