Description
The addition of 'Tokyo' to the title of this Shiba Park snow composition places it within a geographically organized category of Hasui's urban landscape work, likely part of a series explicitly cataloguing Tokyo subjects. This third variant records either a distinct composition set within the park grounds or a different printing state of an earlier design, distinguished by registration, color, or condition of the carved blocks. Shiba Park's proximity to Zojoji Temple meant that compositions set within it often incorporated the temple's architectural elements at the edge of the frame or as a background presence. Hasui's Tokyo snow scenes were among his most commercially successful subjects, responding to urban audiences' nostalgia for seasonal scenery within a rapidly modernizing city. The print likely employs the restrained cool palette characteristic of his Tokyo winter work — whites, greys, and muted blue-greens — with attention to the weight and texture of snow rendered through careful manipulation of the blank paper surface.
