Description
This is among Hasui's earliest treatments of Shinobazu Pond's Bentendo, the island shrine dedicated to Benzaiten in Ueno, Tokyo. The composition likely establishes the compositional template he would revisit in subsequent editions: the squat octagonal pavilion centered on its causeway or island, surrounded by snow-covered water or ice, under a pale winter sky. Published during his productive collaboration with Watanabe Shozaburo, the print exhibits the disciplined craftsmanship of shin-hanga production — precision key-block carving, careful registration, and bokashi gradation in the sky that softens the transition from gray to white. The scene typifies Hasui's project of documenting Tokyo's disappearing traditional landmarks, framing the shrine in a seasonal mood that strips away crowds and commerce.
