Description
Among the later variants of Hasui's Shinobazu Benten Shrine series, this edition shows the octagonal Bentendo from across the frozen pond, with the shrine's upswept roof weighted down by accumulated snow against a sky rendered in flat or gently graded gray. The scene is characteristic of Hasui's meisho-e approach to Tokyo landmarks — presenting familiar sites transformed by weather into states of quiet contemplation. Thin, leafless branches extend across the upper register, a compositional device he frequently employed to add foreground depth without disrupting the atmospheric stillness. The print demonstrates the refinements possible across multiple editions of a single design: adjusted bokashi gradients, revised snow highlights applied in white pigment, or subtle changes in the color of the shrine's woodwork.
