Description
This later variant of the Shinobazu Benten Shrine subject revisits the scene with adjustments that distinguish it from earlier editions — possibly a revised horizon line, altered snow accumulation on the Bentendo's roof, or a shift in the quality of the winter light from overcast to clearing. The pond's surface, whether frozen or still, mirrors the pale tones of the sky in muted reflection, a compositional device central to Hasui's water-and-snow compositions. Bare trees and the distant rooflines of Ueno Park establish the Tokyo setting without urban intrusion. As one of the more numerous reprinting subjects in Hasui's catalogue, the Shinobazu variants as a group illustrate how the shin-hanga publishing system responded to collector demand by reprinting and revising popular designs across decades.
