Description
A third variant in Hasui's treatment of Ginkaku-ji — the Silver Pavilion in Higashiyama, Kyoto — this print depicts the two-story Zen pavilion of Jisho-ji temple under winter snow. Unlike the Golden Pavilion, Ginkaku-ji was never actually coated in silver leaf, and its dark weathered wood absorbs light rather than reflecting it, providing Hasui with a somber tonal anchor against the white of snow. The composition likely incorporates the raked gravel platform (kogetsudai) in the garden's foreground, which under snow becomes an abstract geometric form. This later version may refine the treatment of reflected light on the snow or adjust the rendering of bare deciduous trees in the background hills. The Silver Pavilion series illustrates Hasui's sustained engagement with Kyoto's canonical landscape subjects alongside his Tokyo work.
