Description
The second numbered impression of Hasui's Kiyomizudo snow scene depicts the octagonal Buddhist hall in Ueno Park during a winter snowfall. The composition draws on the visual contrast between the dark wood and tile of the Edo-period structure and the white accumulations covering its roof and the surrounding ground. Stone lanterns, a characteristic element of Japanese religious precincts, likely appear in the foreground with snow caps on their hats. Hasui studied Western-style painting under Okada Saburosuke before committing to woodblock printmaking, and his handling of light and atmospheric perspective reflects that training, applied within the technical constraints of the multi-block printing process. The print was produced in collaboration with a carver and printer, with Hasui approving color trials.
