Description
Hasui's depiction of Kiyomizudo in Ueno Park under snow is one of several views he made of this Edo-period Buddhist hall. The octagonal structure, dedicated to Kannon, stands on a raised platform and is approached by stone steps. In this print, the hall's sweeping roof carries a thick mantle of snow, its dark tiles visible at the edges where the pitch is steepest. Bare winter trees surround the structure, their branches silhouetted against the tonal sky. The shin-hanga approach to such subjects emphasized atmospheric mood over strict topographical accuracy, and Hasui often adjusted lighting, weather, and season to suit the compositional needs of each design. The cool palette of blues and greys is achieved through carefully layered water-soluble pigments on dampened washi.
