Description
This print depicts Kiyomizudo, the octagonal Kannon hall in Tokyo's Ueno Park, in a winter snowscape. Modeled after Kiyomizudera in Kyoto, the hall's curved roof and elevated stone platform make it a distinctive architectural subject. Hasui recorded the site across multiple seasons; the snow version belongs to his sustained interest in depicting Tokyo landmarks under seasonal weather. The composition likely positions the hall slightly off-center, with snow-laden branches entering from the upper margin and stone steps or lanterns anchoring the foreground. Bokashi gradations blending grey into pale blue-white dominate the sky register. The subtle texture of the washi support is visible in areas of thin pigment application, particularly in passages representing accumulated snow.
