Description
A later impression of Hasui's snow composition depicting the Toshogu Shrine in Ueno Park, Tokyo, dedicated to the first Tokugawa shogun. The scene centers on the shrine precinct in winter, with the bronze torii or stone lanterns likely carrying fresh snow on their horizontal surfaces. Hasui's approach to architectural subjects typically places the structure in middle distance, using foreground elements such as snow-dusted paving stones or bare branches to create recession. The mitsugiri format indicates a smaller sheet than the oban standard. Subtle bokashi transitions in the sky distinguish early impressions from later ones, where sky gradations can appear compressed. The interplay of white negative space representing snow against the warm tones of lacquered shrine architecture exemplifies shin-hanga printmaking priorities.
