Description
A variant impression of Hasui's Zojoji Temple snow composition, identifiable by the archaic romanization of the temple name used in earlier publication runs. Zojoji's Sangedatsumon gate, built in 1622 and one of the few Edo-period structures to survive the 1945 firebombing, provided Hasui with a subject combining architectural grandeur and seasonal atmosphere. In this meisho-e composition, the gate's triple-bay structure would be depicted laden with snow, the surrounding pine and zelkova trees bowed under accumulated weight. Hasui's characteristic handling of snowfall—layered washi ground with selective wiping and overprinting—produces a luminous white that appears lit from within rather than merely pale. Minor tonal differences in the sky bokashi or variations in the figure placement distinguish this impression from related states. The composition belongs to Hasui's early landscape series and reflects his training under Kaburagi Kiyokata before his turn to printmaking.
