Description
This impression of the 増上寺の雪 composition represents one of the documented print states or later publisher editions of Hasui's Zojoji snow subject. Across the multiple iterations of this design, differences in pigment density, sky gradation, and the treatment of snowfall accumulation on horizontal surfaces distinguish one state from another. The Sangedatsumon gate's terracotta-red lacquered timbers, muted by overcast light and snow cover, anchor the color field against the white ground of the precinct and the cool grey of the winter sky. Hasui frequently included one or two small figures passing through or near the gate, rendered in traditional layered garments—their scale reinforcing the monumentality of the seventeenth-century structure. The print's winter palette is characteristic of Hasui's shin-hanga approach: emotional atmosphere built from color temperature rather than dramatic incident. This meisho-e subject connects Hasui to the Edo-period topographic print tradition while reflecting the modern movement's interest in mood and seasonal light.
