Description
This impression of 芝増上寺 represents Hasui's treatment of Zojoji Temple in its Shiba district context, with snowfall as the dominant seasonal condition. The woodblock print process required Hasui to design the composition in reverse, coordinating with Watanabe Shozaburo's workshop carvers and printers to achieve the atmospheric effects central to his aesthetic. For snow subjects, the white of the washi itself serves as the primary color, with the printer's baren pressing color blocks in precise sequence to build grey shadow tones and blue-tinted sky gradations around reserved white areas. The gate's vermillion lacquer columns, cooled and grayed under winter light, read as warm notes within an otherwise cold palette. This impression's tonal range—from deep indigo in the upper sky to near-white at the horizon—reflects the graduated kyogokashi printing technique that gave Hasui's winter landscapes their characteristic atmospheric depth.
