Description
Among the 芝増上寺 series impressions, this print likely dates from a later printing run given the sequential numbering within this slug group. In Hasui's Zojoji compositions, later impressions are sometimes distinguished by slightly looser key block registration or reduced pigment density in the sky bokashi as the woodblocks accumulated wear across a print run. The composition maintains the central focus on the Sangedatsumon gate viewed frontally, its three passage openings framed by massive timber columns and surmounted by the multi-story tower structure characteristic of Muromachi and early Edo temple architecture. Snow renders each horizontal surface—the tile-capped stone walls flanking the gate, the upper rooflines, any visible stone lanterns—as accumulations of shaped white. The Shiba neighborhood designation in the title connects the print to a specific urban geography, placing the viewer's approach from the south along what was historically the Tokaido road corridor through Shiba.
