Description
A further printing in the 芝増上寺 group, this oban woodblock print depicts the snow-covered precinct of Zojoji Temple in Shiba, Tokyo. Hasui's sustained return to this subject across multiple compositions and publishers reflects both the site's cultural visibility—Zojoji remained one of Tokyo's most recognized landmarks throughout the Taisho and Showa eras—and the commercial viability of winter landscape subjects among Japanese and Western collectors. The gate's architecture imposes a strong vertical axis on the composition, its paired upswept rooflines creating a dynamic form against the flat recession of the winter sky. Snowfall on the stone approach path is suggested through a pale tonal wash rather than literal depiction, maintaining the compositional hierarchy that keeps the gate as the visual center. The print's relationship to neighboring impressions in this numbered group may be established through pigment comparison, paper analysis, or publisher's seal examination in physical study.
