Description
This chuban-format version of the Zojoji Temple subject presents the same Shiba district landmark at a reduced scale of roughly 19 by 26 centimeters, a format Hasui and publisher Watanabe Shozaburo used for certain early and supplementary editions. The smaller sheet required adjustments in compositional emphasis relative to the standard oban rendering — the gate and surrounding snow-covered grounds compressed to suit the format's proportions. Chuban editions of Hasui's snow subjects are less frequently encountered than their oban counterparts and often represent either early experimental printings or editions produced for specific markets. The temple's sanmon gate, buried in snow, is rendered with the careful attention to architectural detail that distinguishes Hasui's townscape work, while the surrounding winter landscape conveys the stillness typical of his meisho-e compositions in snow.
