Description

Dated 1931, this oban print depicts Shiba Park in Tokyo during winter, adjacent to the grounds of Zojoji Temple with which Hasui frequently associated the area. By 1931, Hasui was working in a mature phase of his career, producing prints with refined color calibration and confident compositional structure. Shiba Park, established in 1873 as one of Tokyo's first public parks on former temple land, offered Hasui a setting combining formal park plantings, pine trees, and glimpses of Zojoji's architecture under snow. The 1931 date situates the print within the Showa period, when shin-hanga publishers including Watanabe Shozaburo maintained active production despite economic pressures. Snow-laden pine branches — a motif Hasui handled with particular control through the precise register of white-block printing — likely feature prominently, with the park's open geometry providing a quieter compositional alternative to the architectural drama of nearby Zojoji subjects.
