Description
Published in Hasui's series Tabi miyage dai nishû (Souvenirs of Travel, Second Series) under publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, this print depicts Miyajima — formally Itsukushima Island in Hiroshima Prefecture — under snow with clear skies. The title Seiten no yuki (Snow on a Bright Day) specifies a particular meteorological condition: snow cover remaining after storm, lit by winter sun, producing intense contrasts between white ground, blue sky, and the island's red torii gate and shrine structures reflected in Hiroshima Bay. The Souvenirs of Travel series, of which this is a second-series entry, organized Hasui's travel prints into coherent publication units and helped establish his reputation for landscape documentation beyond the Kanto region. This condition — bright post-storm winter light — allowed Hasui to deploy a wider tonal range than his overcast snow compositions, with stronger color in architecture and sky.
