Description
Mukojima, the low-lying district on the eastern bank of the Sumida River in Tokyo, was associated with cherry blossoms and riverside teahouses, making its transformation under a winter snowstorm a studied contrast of season and place. Hasui's treatment of a snowstorm differs from quiet snowfall scenes: driving diagonal lines or dense stippling suggest wind and turbulence, and the color palette is compressed into cold silver-greys and dark indigo shadows. The district's modest wooden architecture — riverside inns, stone lanterns, bare cherry trees — would appear as dark silhouettes against the white-grey ground. This composition exists in multiple editions, reflecting its popularity among Watanabe's clientele and the publisher's practice of reprinting successful designs. Each edition shows subtle variation in pigment mixing and baren pressure, producing slightly different tonal relationships within the same key block.
