Description

Tsubosaka-dera, formally Taisan-ji, is a Shingon Buddhist temple perched on the hills of Yamato Province south of Nara city, historically associated with healing of the blind and with folk devotion centered on the Kannon bodhisattva. Hasui's print depicts the temple's precincts—likely its stone lanterns, pagoda, or main hall—beneath a sky heavy with stars, combining religious architecture with nocturnal landscape in the meisho-e tradition. The Nara setting would have offered Hasui's audience a site of both historical resonance and scenic recognition. Rendered in a cool nocturnal palette on washi, the print employs graduated printing to deepen the sky at its upper register while leaving the stone elements of the temple compound legible through pale, carefully controlled color blocks. Stars are distributed through reserve or delicate printing, lending the composition the quiet quality that characterizes Hasui's best night scenes.
