Description
The third in Hasui's Itako summer series, this print continues his sustained visual survey of the canal town in Ibaraki Prefecture, likely focusing on the interplay of water, boats, and riverside architecture that defined Itako's character as an inland port. The Itako compositions were produced across several years and demonstrate Hasui's practice of exhausting a location's pictorial potential through multiple viewpoints and atmospheric conditions. A summer rendering would exploit the lush growth of willows and reeds along the canal banks, rendered in layers of green and yellow-green through successive woodblock impressions. The flat terrain of the Kanto plain meant broad expanses of sky, which Hasui animated with cloud formations or gentle gradations suggesting humid summer air. The bokashi technique applied to sky and water planes would unify the composition tonally while the linear detail of boat rigging and building eaves provided structural contrast.
